ROMAN BLIND ADVICE / LIGHT

Blockout Roman Blinds

A Roman can be specified for privacy and stronger room darkening, but the finished result depends on the complete treatment — not the face fabric or lining in isolation.

THE COMPLETE SYSTEM

Blockout cloth does not guarantee a blacked-out room

A suitable lining can substantially reduce light through the face of the Roman and support evening privacy. Light can still travel around the sides, above the headrail and below the hem. The contrast is most noticeable when the blind is dark and the exterior is bright.

The useful starting point is the room brief. A child’s bedroom, an occasional guest room and a media room may each tolerate different residual light. Avoid using “total blackout” unless the complete installed system has evidence for that outcome.

LINING & FOLD

Added light control changes the construction

Lining contributes privacy, body and light control, but it also adds weight and thickness. The face fabric and lining need to move together without distorting the intended folds. A very soft decorative cloth may respond differently once combined with an opaque lining.

The finished assembly should be assessed, particularly on a tall blind or a waterfall style where more fabric is already present across the face. More layers are not automatically better if they create excessive stack or compromise movement.

FITTING POSITION

Coverage matters at the perimeter

A recess fit preserves the architrave and can look architecturally clean, but it normally leaves narrow side gaps for movement. A face fit may allow the fabric to overlap the opening and improve coverage. The overlap still needs to look proportionate and clear nearby walls, joinery and controls.

Window handles, uneven reveals and projecting sills can create additional light paths. These are site conditions to identify during measurement, not details a fabric specification can correct later.

BEDROOM PLANNING

Layer where each treatment has a purpose

A Roman may be combined with curtains where the room needs both a tailored textile feature and additional perimeter coverage. Curtains can frame the opening and soften residual side light while the Roman provides independent control at the window.

Layering needs space for both treatments to move. Headrail projection, curtain returns, stack-back and access to each control should be resolved together. In some rooms, a blockout curtain or a more compact secondary blind will be the clearer answer.

Before you decide

Questions & answers

Will a blockout Roman make my bedroom completely dark?

It can provide strong room darkening, but light may remain around an operable blind. The result depends on lining, mounting position, overlap, recess conditions and whether another treatment covers the perimeter.
