Draw the elevation and the section
In elevation, check the pelmet depth against the window height, cornice and other horizontal lines in the room. Too deep a face can lower the apparent opening and remove useful daylight. In section, allow for track projection, heading movement and the full depth of any second curtain layer.
A straight upholstered face creates a different effect from a shaped or piped treatment. Pattern scale and the meeting of motifs at corners deserve the same attention as they do on the curtains below.
Understand the practical role
| Role | Detail that matters |
|---|---|
| Conceal the track | Allow a clean sightline from normal standing and seated positions without obstructing the curtain. |
| Limit light above the curtain | Review the top opening together with centre overlap, side returns and floor clearance. A pelmet alone does not make the room light-tight. |
| Integrate two layers | Provide sufficient internal depth and a practical way to access both tracks. |
| Frame the window | Balance width with the open curtain stacks, not only the glass dimensions. |

Keep the system serviceable
Tracks, brackets and motors still need inspection and maintenance after the pelmet is fitted. Establish removable access and suitable fixing support before fabrication. At a renovation, coordinate with the final ceiling and wall finish rather than relying on preliminary dimensions.

Questions & answers
Does every curtain need a pelmet?
No. An exposed decorative rod or a carefully positioned minimal track may suit the room better. A pelmet should solve a visual or practical problem rather than be added by default.
Can a pelmet improve sound insulation?
Its appearance does not establish acoustic performance. Any acoustic claim must relate to a tested complete system; see LuxAura Acoustics for CCBD’s technical-data process.
