Choose a working system, not isolated components
| Component | What to coordinate |
|---|---|
| Track or decorative rod | Required travel, heading compatibility, overall load, bends and the available fixing support. |
| Brackets and projection | Clearance past handles, architraves and other layers without bringing the curtain unnecessarily far into the room. |
| Carriers, hooks and stops | Compatibility with the chosen track and heading, consistent hanging height and controlled closing positions. |
| Returns and overlap | A neat end condition, balanced leading edges and appropriate coverage around the opening. |
| Tiebacks and holdbacks | An intentional resting shape that does not pull the curtain against sharp hardware or distort its fall. |

The fixing surface matters
A ceiling-mounted curtain requires more than an attractive line on a drawing. The substrate and fixing method must suit the finished treatment, including linings and any motorised equipment. Where support is limited, the position or system may need to change.
On a bay, curved track or long run, consider how the carriers pass joins and changes in direction. For decorative rods, confirm whether brackets restrict the curtain’s travel. These details are easier to resolve before making than after installation.
Keep the finish visually quiet
Match or deliberately contrast hardware with nearby metalwork, but also assess it against the fabric in daylight. Finial length, bracket visibility and track colour can alter the perceived width of the window. The most useful accessory is the one that supports the curtain without demanding attention.

Questions & answers
Can I reuse my existing track?
Only after its condition, capacity, heading compatibility and position are checked. New lining or a fuller curtain may place different demands on hardware that worked for the previous treatment.
Are child-safety details part of hardware selection?
Yes. The operating method and any accessible cords or chains must be considered from the start, then installed and maintained according to the selected system’s instructions and applicable safety requirements.
