Short answer
A sheer and blockout curtain can operate independently when each has its own suitable track and control. Motorising both layers is useful when both are moved regularly; if one layer rarely changes position, one motor may deliver most of the practical benefit.
01
Two layers solve different problems.
An open sheer and open blockout give a clear outlook. A closed sheer with an open blockout can soften daylight and help daytime screening. Closing both changes evening privacy and room darkening, but exact performance depends on the cloth, lighting, overlap and fitting.
A sheer alone is not a reliable evening privacy treatment when the room is lit. Likewise, blockout fabric does not remove every edge gap. The two tracks need enough separation to let both headings, folds and stacks move freely.
02
Decide which layer actually moves.
In some rooms the sheer stays in one position while the lined curtain opens and closes daily. In others both change several times with light and privacy. Specify the control routine from those habits rather than assuming both layers need the same automation.
Independent control can be valuable for bedrooms and open-plan living areas, but it adds a second motor, track integration and control logic. Discuss whether simultaneous scenes are useful or whether simple separate controls will be clearer.
03
Check the hidden geometry.
Measure the depth of the recess or pelmet, each curtain’s fullness, the open stacks, motor sides and distance from handles. A double treatment that looks tidy in elevation may still rub, crowd the glazing or hide a service point.
At handover, demonstrate each layer and any grouped scene. Identify which control operates which track and what remains available if an app, hub or mains supply is unavailable.
- Separate track clearance
- Independent or grouped routines
- Motor and charging access
- Day and evening privacy
Apply it to the room
What changes the recommendation?
CCBD should recommend one or two motors only after discussing how each layer is used. The finished design must retain track clearance, useful stacking and service access.
