Start with the screen and the remaining light paths
View the room from the seating position while daylight reaches the windows. Direct light, a bright perimeter gap and reflections from a glossy surface can each affect the picture. Blockout lining addresses light through the fabric; tracks, returns, overlaps and the relationship to the window address light around it.
A roller system with suitable edge detailing may be considered where space is limited. A lined curtain can cover a broader area and coordinate with the room finishes, but its stack needs somewhere to sit without obscuring speakers or the screen.
Keep the two performance briefs explicit
| Brief | Window-furnishing decisions |
|---|---|
| Light control | Fabric opacity, top and side gaps, meeting edges, reflective surfaces and operating positions. |
| Room acoustics | Proposed treatment area and construction assessed alongside speakers, room geometry and other surfaces. |
| Sound reaching other rooms | Building-element and flanking-path assessment; a curtain is not a substitute for isolation design. |
| Everyday operation | Control grouping, access to manual operation where applicable and servicing of motors or tracks. |

A dark fabric is a visual choice, not a test result
Lower-sheen finishes can be useful around a screen, but acoustic suitability needs separate evidence for the proposed assembly. Adding more absorption everywhere is not automatically the right design for a listening room. An acoustic consultant can define where treatment is needed and how it fits the intended listening conditions.
- Keep drapery clear of equipment ventilation and follow equipment clearance requirements.
- Coordinate track and power positions with the audiovisual layout before final installation.

Questions & answers
Are velvet curtains required for a home theatre?
No. A fabric should be chosen for the required appearance, opacity, care and any verified acoustic role. Velvet is one visual direction, not a universal technical specification.
Can one motorised command close all the furnishings?
Compatible controls may allow grouping or scenes. Confirm the selected motors, controller and integration method, and plan how individual windows will be operated and serviced.
