Keep cord safety in the room plan
Loose curtain and blind cords can create a strangulation hazard. Keep cots, beds and climbable furniture away from windows and cords, and consider a suitable cordless or motorised control arrangement. Motorisation does not remove the need to assess every remaining accessible cord, cable and component.
Where a corded product is selected, its required safety devices and installation instructions are part of the finished installation, not optional accessories. Review the room again when furniture moves or the child becomes more mobile.
Specify for the whole day
| Daily need | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Daytime rest | Opaque lining plus perimeter light detailing, with realistic expectations about remaining gaps. |
| Play and reading | A separate light-filtering layer rather than keeping the room dark throughout the day. |
| Regular cleaning | A fabric with clear care instructions and a finish that stays clear of routine floor cleaning. |
| Changing furniture | Controls and window access that remain practical when a cot becomes a bed or a desk is added. |

Choose a fabric that can grow with the room
A quiet base fabric can remain useful when bedding, paint and toys change. For a patterned Roman blind, discuss which part of the motif will be visible when the blind is raised; a small sample gives little indication of the finished repeat. A curtain needs enough stack space to clear the window without gathering beside an accessible climbing surface.
- Choose care requirements the household can realistically maintain.
- Check hems and raised blind stacks against heaters, shelving and opening windows.
- Store remotes appropriately and retain the product’s operating and maintenance instructions.

Questions & answers
Is a motorised blind automatically child-safe?
Removing a manual operating loop can reduce an accessible-cord hazard, but safety depends on the complete product, installation and room layout. Remaining cables, cords and components still need assessment, and furniture should stay away from windows.
Are Roman blinds suitable for a child’s room?
They can be considered with a suitable system and installation. Review all operating and internal cord arrangements, the manufacturer’s safety requirements and furniture placement rather than choosing by the front appearance alone.
