Treat the glazing and the floor plan together
A full-height curtain can bring a continuous line across several glazed panels, but the open stack still occupies real space. Decide where it should park before placing a sofa or dining table. Where there is no side wall, the stack may need to sit partly in front of the glass; that trade-off should be visible on the plan.
A roller blind can keep the treatment compact, while a Roman blind introduces fabric character above a desk or bed. On a long glazed wall, separate operating zones may be more useful than making every panel move together, especially beside the balcony door.

| Condition | Planning response |
|---|---|
| Nearby balconies or facing apartments | Assess sightlines with lights on after dark, not only through a daytime sample. |
| A shallow ceiling recess | Confirm space for carriers, curtain waves, brackets and servicing access. |
| Large western glass | Compare glare-control needs with heat-management advice for the glazing and building. |
| A balcony door used frequently | Keep the active opening and handle clear; align the draw direction with daily movement. |
| Restrictions on fixing or exterior appearance | Check relevant building and strata requirements before hardware and lining are finalised. |

Separate the privacy brief from the noise brief
A sheer may offer useful daytime screening, but its appearance changes when the interior is brighter than outdoors. An independent opaque layer gives more control after dark. Street noise or sound from neighbours needs a separate assessment: treating a window is not a substitute for addressing sound through walls, vents or poorly sealed openings.
- Choose a lining colour with the exterior view in mind.
- Confirm practical access for installation, cleaning and future motor servicing.
- Discuss battery charging access or power provisions before selecting a motorised system.

Questions & answers
Can we install curtains in a finished apartment?
Often a retrofit arrangement can be explored, but the fixing substrate, concealed services, permissions and available clearance need checking first. Photos and building details help frame the initial discussion; final dimensions require site measurement.
Will a sheer keep neighbours from seeing in at night?
Not reliably when the room is illuminated and the outside is darker. Plan an opaque privacy layer where overlooking matters, then test the fabric and layout against the actual sightlines.
