Battery vs Hardwired Motorised Curtains: A Sydney Homeowner’s Guide

Compare rechargeable and hardwired curtain systems for finished homes, renovations and new builds in Sydney, including charging, load and service access.

Short answer

Rechargeable motorisation is often attractive when a finished room has no convenient power at the track. Hardwired power deserves early consideration when a renovation or new build already exposes walls and ceilings. The best choice still depends on the exact curtain, motor, access and daily use.

01

Start with the condition of the room.

In an existing home, the disruption and cost of new concealed wiring may outweigh the advantage of continuous power. A suitable rechargeable system can make a retrofit cleaner, but only if its rated load suits the finished curtain and the charging point remains genuinely reachable.

During renovation, ask about power before plasterboard and joinery close. A hardwired option may be easier to integrate at that stage than after the curtain pocket is complete. A new build gives the most freedom to coordinate the electrical plan, recess, track line and service access.

02

Compare the ongoing task, not just the installation.

Rechargeable does not mean maintenance-free: identify who will charge the system, where the connector is and what equipment is needed. Charging frequency varies by motor, battery, curtain load and operating pattern; a single advertised interval should not be applied to every installation.

Hardwired removes routine charging but still needs reachable motor and controls for commissioning or replacement. Fixed wiring work in NSW requires an appropriately licensed electrical worker. Keep curtain-making, track installation and electrical responsibilities clear in the quote.

03

Check the finished curtain before choosing power.

A heavy lined curtain on a long track may narrow the suitable motor choices. Fabric weight alone is insufficient: fullness, heading, number of panels, opening direction, bends and daily cycles also shape the actual operating duty.

Ask for the proposed motor model, its Australian specification, track configuration, charging or power location and handover instructions. If one of those is undecided, treat the power recommendation as provisional.

What changes the recommendation?

For a finished Sydney room, compare a viable rechargeable design with the real cost and disruption of electrical work. For open-wall work, consider hardwired power before finishes are installed. Neither route should be approved ahead of the completed curtain specification.
