Design around movement, not against it
If a pet regularly pushes through a curtain to reach a favourite window, plan an accessible viewing position or a convenient way to draw that section back. A curtain sitting across the busiest door route is more likely to be pulled, brushed or soiled. Separate operating zones can make a large window arrangement easier to live with.
A Roman or roller blind may keep fabric away from the floor when raised, but a lowered blind still needs a clear operating path. Shutter blades, tracks and bottom rails are also exposed to paws and impact. No window furnishing should be described as pet-proof.
Judge a sample for daily use
| Detail | Useful question |
|---|---|
| Weave and surface | Are there loose loops or open textures likely to catch claws? Compare the actual samples. |
| Colour and texture | How visible will the household’s usual hair and marks be on this surface? |
| Cleaning instructions | Is the recommended care realistic, and can the treatment be removed and refitted when needed? |
| Hem clearance | Can the fabric finish clear of the floor rather than collecting in a decorative puddle? |
| Operating hardware | Are cords secured and controls positioned away from play and regular movement? |

Keep the detail quiet and maintainable
A closely considered weave and a practical hem may be more useful than adding a fabric treatment with vague durability claims. Lining and face fabric can have different care needs, so the finished curtain’s care instructions matter more than the face-fabric label alone. Discuss removable components, access to tracks and replacement considerations when the specification is prepared.
- Keep feeding areas and pet beds clear of the curtain travel.
- Raise or draw furnishings before opening a door that produces a strong draught.
- Check for damage to cords, fabric and hardware rather than continuing to use an obstructed mechanism.

Questions & answers
Is there a scratch-proof curtain fabric?
No fabric should be promised as immune to claws or persistent pulling. Compare weave, snag risk and care requirements, then combine the selection with sensible access and operating habits.
Are shutters always better than fabric around pets?
Not necessarily. Shutters avoid a loose floor-length hem, but blades and frames can still be marked or damaged. The best direction depends on the pet’s habits, window access, cleaning and the required light control.
