Master Bedroom Curtains & Blinds

A bedroom brief is more precise than choosing a blockout fabric. The complete treatment must manage light at its edges, privacy after dark and the way you use the room in the morning.

Find the light paths, not just the opaque fabric

Blockout describes the light-blocking function of a fabric or lining. The finished room can still receive light above a track, around a Roman blind or between curtain panels. A face-fit arrangement, suitable overlap and carefully resolved returns can address some of these paths; the result still depends on the opening and installation.

If street lighting or early sun is the problem, identify its direction during consultation. A narrow recess-fit blind may look discreet but leave visible perimeter light. A curtain layered in front can be worth considering where there is sufficient depth and stack space.

Use the architecture to choose the construction

Roman blinds can work well above a headboard or desk where floor-length fabric would be obstructed. Check that the raised folds do not cover more of the window than expected, especially under a shallow bulkhead. Curtains give a softer vertical finish on full-height glazing, but need sufficient room for both the closed drape and the open stack.

  • Check lining compatibility with the chosen face fabric rather than selecting it by weight alone.
  • Allow for wardrobe doors, bedside tables and an opening window before positioning controls.
  • Agree a practical hem clearance; heavy pooling fabric is not necessary for a restful appearance.

Questions & answers

Does blockout mean a completely dark room?

Not on its own. The fabric can be opaque while light remains visible around the installation. Set the desired darkness level first, then assess the entire window treatment and any other light sources in the room.

Can curtains solve traffic noise outside the bedroom?

A curtain may be considered within an acoustic brief, but the glazing, seals and other sound paths need assessment. No room-specific noise reduction is promised from decorative fabric or an unverified assembly.
